HAGA and the Houston Community

HAGA is not just about playing golf. We have several members who volunteer at The First Tee, several who help the Texas Golf Association put on USGA events, and we marshal Hole 8 at the Shell Houston Open.

Since 2005 HAGA has donated money to the HGA Junior Golf programs. In 2011 we donated $3,750 to The First Tee of Greater Houston bringing our total to date contributions to $11,125. In addition, the men of HAGA generously donated numerous golf bags, clubs, balls and shoes. Our fund raising was done over three events and ended at Cypresswood on November 6 when 12 First Tee kids greeted our members at the check-in table and practiced introducing themselves; a good experience for both groups. Once the tournament began the kids watched our guys tee off on the first hole and applauded good (and sometimes not so good!) shots. Many of them had never been on a golf course.

On Saturday, January 21, 2012, six members of the Houston Amateur Golf Association attended the check presentation to the First Tee of our 2011 contribution.

HAGA raised a total of $3,000 for The First Tee at our Houston Oaks event on Sunday, August 29, 2010. Special thanks to Garry Brunson for organizing the event. See the 2010 Charity Tournament page for photos from the event.

As a result of our successful junior golf fund raiser in 2009, the HAGA board considered and approved a motion to become a Silver Sponsor of HGA Junior Golf. As a Silver Sponsor the Houston Amateur Golf Association was the Title Sponsor for the Houston Golf Association Junior Golf Match Play tournament at Memorial Park July 14-16, 2010. See the 2010 HGA Match Play page for more details.

One of our members, Michael Sloan, plays in a golf marathon each fall to raise money for the Brookwood Community in Brookwood, TX. Their mission is to provide an educational environment that creates meaningful jobs, builds a sense of belonging, and demands dignity and respect for adults with special needs.

Michael typically plays HAGA events in knickers and also participates in hickory shaft golf tournaments around the country and in Canada. He has raised over $40,000 in the 15 years he has participated in the Brookwood golf marathon. Below are a couple of pictures of Michael at the Houston Oaks event. He completed 102 holes!
