What's New?
The 2008 Winter Tour ended in a tie for Low Gross with Greg Gerson and Jason Miller at 299. Troy England finished first in the Low Net category at 279, Kevin Duke second at 282. Ron Marshall and David Salvati tied for third at 284. Congratulations to all the winners of the 2008 HAGA Winter Tour.
Beginning on March 1st, 2008, The Sienna Plantation Golf Club in Missouri City has graciously agreed to provide the HAGA with a course to call our own. The club will proudly display our trophy case in their clubhouse and provide all HAGA members with same discounted greens fee rates they provide the residents of the Sienna Plantation subdivisions. This discount is $10.00 off their standard rates, anytime. You will be required to show your HAGA Handicap Card (GHIN Card) in order to receive the discount. Sienna Plantation will also have an up-to-date roster of all HAGA members in case you forget your card. Secondly, HAGA members will be permitted to make tee times at Sienna Plantation one week in advance of your intended play date. (Normal policy is 3 days in advance). In return, the HAGA will annually play one regular tournament event and 2 of the 4 rounds of our Club Championship at Sienna Plantation beginning in 2009. Sienna Plantation will present an excellent test for part of the Club Championship as the last 5 holes deliver many "make or break" opportunities for the leaders and those trying to catch them.
On Tuesday, January 8th, 2008, the HAGA Board discussed and agreed upon two important changes to the organization.
- Changing the name of the Masters Tournament to The Memorial Tournament. Each year, the event will now be played in honor a HAGA member - past or present, living or deceased – who has meant a lot to the organization. This change will take affect beginning with this year's tournament in San Antonio on May 3rd & 4th. If you have a suggestion for an honoree for this year's tournament, please pass your suggestion on to the Tournament Director or any other member of the Board for consideration.
- Allowing the use of rangefinders (laser or GPS) within our events. Improper Use of Range Finders – In accordance with USGA Rules of Golf, the Note under Rule 14-3 for all HAGA Championships and tournaments is in effect. Therefore, a player may obtain distance information by using a device that measures distance only. If, during a stipulated round, a player uses a distance-measuring device that is designed to gauge or measure other conditions that might affect his play (gradient, wind speed, temperature, etc.) the player is in breach of Rule 14-3, for which the penalty is disqualification, regardless of whether any such additional information function is actually used.
Rich Vigil won the first Bobby Jones Award of 2008 on January 6th at Clear Creek with a one-under par 71 gross and a net 65.
