What's New?
Jason Miller finished the final round of the 2009 Houston Amateur Golf Association Club Championship with a one-under 71 to capture the low gross title. Jason trailed Clay Garner by one stroke going into the final round. Jeff Riddle held off a charge by Clay Garner to win the low net title by one stroke. Not to be denied, Clay won the Championship flight. Jeff won the First flight and Cliff Brooks won the Second flight on his 60th birthday. Click here for the complete results of the 2009 HAGA Club Championship.
Dan Yamashiro won the 2009 HAGA Player of the Year award by just two points over Fred Lagrasta. Congratulations to Dan for his consistent play over the year.
Jeremy Clark defeated Brian LaCour 3&2 to win the 2009 HAGA Match Play event.
The Houston Chronicle covered our tournament at High Meadow Ranch on August 2nd and published a video interview with Mike Westrum and Jared Coyle. Congratulations to Mike and Jared for a job well done. Special thanks to Todd Hveem and Chris Elliott for the great coverage.
On July 29, the Houston Chronicle published an article about the Houston Amateur Golf Association, "Competitive itch can be scratched" by Todd Hveem and on July 30th a video interview by Chris Elliott with Chip Block, Fred Lagrasta and Garry Brunson at the Memorial Park Golf Course. Thanks to Chip, Fred and Garry for taking time out of their busy schedules for the interview.
At our tournament at Cypresswood on July 19, HAGA raised almost $1,500 for the HGA Junior Golf program. It was our most successful fund raiser yet. The men of HAGA would like to thank 14 year-old HGA Junior Golf member Emily Gilbreth who stood in the sun for four hours to participate in a closest to the pin, 'Beat The Kid' contest. Her efforts alone raised $350. To the chagrin of some of our members the final score was Emily – 47, HAGA – 18. We will try and find a lesser skilled player next year to give all a better chance. Thanks for all of your contributions and a special thanks to Garry Brunson and Cliff Brooks for helping on the par 3 challenge and to Michael Sloan and Fred Lagrasta for donating $5 for each birdie.
Kevin Duke won the first Bobby Jones Award of 2009 at Walden on Lake Conroe on June 28 by firing a one-under 71. His net score was 65. Congratulations to Kevin for a great round of golf.
Bryant Darnay won the first Hole-In-One Pool with an ace on hole #6 of the River course at River Ridge on March 22, 2009.
Pairings for the first round of the 2009 HAGA Match Play Tournament were drawn at the Board Meeting on March 10. The complete match play bracket and rules for match play are listed on the Match Play page.
David Phillips won the 2009 Winter Tour Low Gross award, $150, with a best four round total of 316. Henry Luna won the Low Net award, $300, with a best four round total of 281. Jon Holliday and Rick McKinney tied for second, $150, with totals of 286.
Players may now participate in an optional Hole-In-One pool for $5.00. Money will remain in the pool until someone scores a hole-in-one. There will be a sign-up list at each tournament. Players currently on the list and the size of the pool can be viewed at Hole-In-One Pool.
HAGA and the Houston Community
HAGA is not just about playing golf. We have several members who volunteer at The First Tee, several who help the Texas Golf Association put on USGA events, and we marshal Hole 2 at the Administaff Classic.
One of our members, Michael Sloan, plays in a golf marathon each fall to raise money for the Brookwood Community in Brookwood, TX. Their mission is to provide an educational environment that creates meaningful jobs, builds a sense of belonging, and demands dignity and respect for adults with special needs.
Michael typically plays HAGA events in knickers and also participates in hickory shaft golf tournaments around the country and in Canada. He has raised over $40,000 in the 15 years he has participated in the Brookwood golf marathon. Below are a couple of pictures of Michael at this year's event on November 3, 2009 at Houston Oaks. He completed 102 holes this year.
During the week of Oct. 12, HAGA volunteers marshalled Hole No. 2 for the sixth consecutive year at the Administaff Small Business Classic held at the Woodlands Tournament Course. Many thanks to George Harnett for organizing the effort and spending many long hours at the tournament. Thanks also to the other volunteers who helped out during week.

As a result of our successful junior golf fund raiser this year, the HAGA board considered and approved a motion to become a Silver Sponsor of HGA Junior Golf. At the Silver level, we will sponsor an HGA junior golf premier event. The sponsoring organization receives recognition and signage at the sponsored event along with the sponsor’s logo appearing on all awards and gifts. Several member of the board met at the HGA office and presented a check for $2500 to Bill Walker of the HGA.
